"Here are some pictures of my grandmother's wedding gown--very simple, but she was so gorgeous. The material has aged to a warm off-white/golden color and has a satiny sheen to it. (I am not sure what type of fabric it actually is.) I know that the beadwork around the neckline is probably not salvageable for use on a baptismal gown, but I would like to keep it and maybe display it in a shadow box type frame.

Everyone at the baptism oohed and ahhed over the gown, especially my mom and all 6 of her siblings who got to see their mom's wedding gown reincarnated.

4 Generation Gown

Rarely do I sew for another sewer. Susan is the exception though since she found me through Threads. Susan and I worked together to design a dress comprising 4 generations of women. This was such a fabulous project. Not only because the material she sent was beautiful, but also because of its sentimental nature. Represented in this dress are pearl buttons from great-grandma's wedding gown, lace from grandma's wedding gown as well as mother's high school graduation dress and wedding dress crinoline.

Here are the pictures of the original dresses:

Susan wanted a very girly, very full dress that incorporated all of the sentimental keepsakes. She also wanted to stitch on a few finishing touches as well. Makes me wish I could be in Ohio for the christening!

Crystal Laden Christening Gown

Here is Melissa's wedding gown conversion. Her little girl's dress is full of silver embroidery and swarovski crystals on ivory duchess satin. Melissa was a little bit concerned about her dress because it had huge stains up the side that didn't come out during the dry cleaning process. They were successfully avoided during cutting and very few stains are still visible. I think it was definitely worth the risk! Her dress is weighted and full of lace trimmed crinoline underneath. It is stunning.

Wedding Gown to Christening Gown

Anne, from California, has adopted a special baby girl. This wedding dress was re-made for her:

I struggled with the pictures for this dress - I can't seem to capture how luxurious it really is. One thing is for sure - every dress is so much better in person!
The bonnet was made from the hemline of the original dress. The waistline of mum's gown was kept in tact to form the center of the dress with the original pearled waistline. Tiny pink bows were added to the puffed cap sleeve. And swarovski crystals and pearls were hand sewn onto the center panel of the bodice. This is a back view of the four part pale pink sash:

There is pink tulle peeking out from under the skirt although I know it looks white :)

Little one year old ballet slippers have leather bottoms and were cut from an exact tracing of Baby Girl's feet.

Wedding Gowns to Christening Gown

Catherine's mum passed away not too long ago and sadly, she will be unable to see her little granddaughter be christened. So, Catherine had me (us) rework her mum's wedding gown into a brand new creation for her daughter and future grandchildren. But not only did we use grandma's dress we also used Catherine's shawl to bring them together into one outfit. So special!! Since Catherine wanted a gown that could be used in the future for a baby boy I made the gown in two layers.

The top layer is made from the shawl (with great bling). It has one simple flower from grandma's dress and ribbon ties at the side. The bonnet comes straight from the cuff around the neck of the wedding dress. I think it turned out beautifully!

When the overlay is removed there is a perfectly simple baby boy gown underneath. The best of both worlds I'd say!

Do you remember what it looked like before? She's come a long way baby!

What is the difference between a Christening and a Baptism?

The purpose of a Christening is to providing a symbol that you want to bring your child up in the eyes of God, and will try to provide them with Christian beliefs to the best of your abilities. Christening ceremonies began in the early Christian church as a public declaration that the child's parents are dedicating their child to God and the Christian Church. The christening ceremony is not intended to have saving merits, it is left for the child to choose faith and baptism as an adult.

Traditionally a Christening is when the parents of an infant or young child join together with family and the congregation to dedicate their baby specifically to Christ and the Christian faith. In the past this was when the naming ceremony was held and the child was given their proper name. It is considered that during the Christening the child was spiritually reborn in Christ. Parents promise to raise their child in the Christian faith and set a good example for their growing child. Godparents are also usually chosen to help the family lead the infant towards a strong faith as the baby grows up.

Baptism finds it's origins in the story of John the Baptist, although Baptism is not unique to Christianity. Baptism is the spiritual analogy to birth itself. To be baptized is to be spiritually reborn. The water represents a fresh start after having been born into human sin. Usually, the parents must be members of the church where the baptism takes place, but in many churches it's not mandatory. Check with your houses of worship in your area if you are not an active member for their standards and baptism regulations.

A Baptism is traditionally when an older child or Adult dedicates themselves to God. Baptisms are thought of as a more active ceremony by some churches, because it is not the parents that are making the decision, but the older child or an adult themselves that is taking the Christian faith.

This gown was custom made for a customer in California. She asked for a modified design based on our Eliza gown. The A-line, princess waist is tailored to fit the exact width of the bodice so there is no gathering and bulk at the waistline.

Choosing the right lace for your gown is important. When making a high-end heirloom you want your trims to be of high quality too!

One of my favorite design elements for a christening or baptism gown is to add a touch of color. Blue and pink are the most popular choices for gender specific gowns; gold and silver for unisex gowns.

Make your own Rosebud Wreath

Need to make your own rosebud crown for your flower girl? Here are a few tips...

The trickiest part is finding high quality flowers. I suggest avoiding polyester flowers at all costs! Nothing will cheapen your wreath faster than tacky foliage. I really like the paper flowers shown below. I found them at a wholesale shop in Mississauga (if you can't find any this nice let me know and I'll hook you up!)

I've made MANY wreaths and definitely the best fit is achieved by leaving the back open. Make loops on both ends with your wire so ribbons can be strung through and tied to fit the child's head depending on the hairstyle you choose.

Step By Step:

First: wrap the flower stems around a thin piece of wire.

Second: weave a long organza ribbon between the flowers leaving extra length at both ends

Third: use small amounts of hot glue to secure the flowers where necessary.

Voila! A dainty and romantic hair accessory for your little flower girl.

This William Gown was made for Carolyn in Ottawa. I love how she took a few pieces of fabric from her own wedding gown and had them incorporated into the dress. For example the ties shown below. The great thing about this gown is that it can be used for a boy or a girl and passed down for generations. Remember to have your gown professionally cleaned and then you can wrap it in acid free cotton or muslin for storage. **Never use plastic or your dress can mold!

Designing a Christening Gown...

...is a lot of fun. I usually start by sitting in a puddle of fabric on the floor and deciding on a focal point for the dress. Once I know the main "feel" I want the dress to have I plan on how to tie all the pieces together. For this gown I am using the silver beaded embroidery as the main component. I will be including it in the bonnet, a 19 Century 3/4 sleeve and the trim on the hem. Part of the challenge with a wedding gown is trying to work around the stained or soiled areas. There are also 'grain' or angle considerations to deal with when re-making a garment. It's a lot easier to start from scratch in some instances. This particular gown has yards and yards of fabric in the skirt so that makes me smile :) I look forward to getting the final product up to show you!
